Bearings And Their Main Uses

What are bearings and what do we use them for? Bearings are carefully engineered components used in many types of machinery and equipment. Without bearings, machines’ rotating parts would not be able to operate efficiently at high speeds and while carrying heavy loads.

For a bearing to be of the best possible quality, it must be manufactured from a durable material and engineered to offer exceptional precision and unfailing reliability. Strength, durability, and a long lifespan are therefore key characteristics of high-quality bearings. Of course, a good bearing is also able to rotate and/or slide smoothly, depending on the movements that the bearings are designed to facilitate, and at high speed without noise and vibration.

5 Applications Bearings Are Used In

Most appliances, machines, and equipment we use rely on bearings hidden in their innards that we don’t even know are there. If it twists, turns, rotates, spins, or moves up and down, it probably uses bearings to facilitate these motions with the minimum of friction. We encounter bearings in many types of everyday equipment, and these include aircraft, passenger and commercial vehicles, household appliances, and computers.

Types of Bearings

Over the years, many types of bearings have been developed for many different uses. Some feature a simple design, while others are more complex and offer several unique characteristics, depending on the machine in which they are used. When you consider the complexity of some applications, it is easy to understand why so many bearing varieties are needed. While there is a plethora of bearing types available on the market, the four main types are:

  • Ball bearings (usually found in fans and wheels).
  • Spherical roller bearings (usually found in processing equipment and conveyors).
  • Cylindrical and needle roller bearings (usually found in construction equipment and gearboxes).
  • Tapered roller bearings (found in gearboxes, processing equipment, and energy-production machinery).

Choosing the Right Bearing

The overall quality rating of the bearings you buy are not always visible to the naked eye and will depend on where you get them from. Choosing a reliable and reputable supplier is the first step to take to ensure that your bearings are of the highest possible quality and fit for purpose.
